V Foundation

The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by ESPN and legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano with one goal in mind: to achieve Victory Over Cancer®. Since its formation in 1993, the V Foundation has awarded over $310 million in cancer research grants nationwide and has grown to become one of the premier supporters of cutting-edge cancer research. Due to generous donors, the Foundation has an endowment that covers administrative expenses.

Golden State has a tradition of offering pink October shirts each year to support breast cancer awareness. This year, we’re introducing a new approach and reaching out to our valued customers for donations. These contributions will be directed towards benefiting the V Foundation, and with the combined support of Golden State and BMD, we will match total donations up to $10k, potentially allowing us to contribute a total of $20k!

The 2012 corporate video spotlights Dr. Johanna Joyce, a 2005 V Scholar; Dr. Michel Sadelain, a 2005 Designated Grant; and Dr. Minkui Luo, a 2009 V Scholar.

Dr. Joyce has used her V Scholar grant to study how normal cells in the body surprisingly promote the spread of cancer.

Dr. Michel Sadelain has started a lab to teach patient's normal cells how to recognize and kill tumor cells.

Dr. Luo has focused on stopping parasites from spreading ovarian cancer, melanoma, and leukemia.
